South Pointe Beach in Miami Beach, Florida. Climate risk is "always on our thoughts," said Habibian, 39, who moved to Miami-Dade County about six years ago. Despite that risk, 66% of Miami-Dade County residents said they'd never leave, according to a study published in the journal Climate Risk Management. "We try to be smart about it, try to be proactive as best we can," Arditi said of climate risk. The survey, which has been running for a decade, reflects input from nearly 12,000 expats representing 177 nationalities in 181 countries or territories. Pros: Mexico ranked first in InterNations’ 2023 Expat Insider survey and has ranked among the top five countries since 2014. Cons: As is the case in Mexico and other countries with large expat communities, there’s growing backlash against the influx of foreigners, especially Americans, and especially in Lisbon. That popularity among auslanders has contributed to a housing pinch in major cities, especially Berlin, where finding accommodation is one of the most stressful aspects of a move.

Three experienced moderators will lead Wednesday’s meeting in Miami of the remaining Republican presidential candidates, although former President Donald J. Trump will again be absent. Lester Holt and Kristen Welker, two lead anchors at NBC News, which is overseeing the debate’s production and editorial process, will serve alongside Hugh Hewitt, a conservative radio host who works for a co-sponsor of the debate, Salem Media Group. Mr. Holt, the anchor of “NBC Nightly News,” was the sole moderator of Mr. Trump’s first general-election debate with Hillary Clinton, in September 2016. Mr. Holt took a minimalist approach that evening, sometimes allowing the candidates to argue between themselves, although his lack of interruption granted viewers an unfiltered view of the candidates’ rhetorical styles. Ms. Welker, the host of “Meet the Press,” was the sole moderator of Mr. Trump’s final debate against Joseph R. Biden Jr., in October 2020.

Bezos makes third losing bet on real estate
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( Ben Winck | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
It’s not the only questionable real estate decision Bezos has made in the past several years. He announced in a Thursday Instagram post that he will move to Miami, leaving the Washington city where he founded Amazon in 1994. Bezos grew up in the south-Florida city in the early 1980s, and he will return to a two-mansion compound worth some $147 million, according to Bloomberg. Miami-based real estate had a renaissance during the pandemic as people sought warmer climates where they could be outside. Still, the founder is no stranger to real estate bets that don’t always make financial sense.

The Ballon d’Or, the most prestigious individual soccer award of the year, rewards the best player over a 12-month period. But Lionel Messi essentially won it in just about a month late last year. Rather it was his performance in helping carry Argentina last December to its first World Cup since 1986. He won the tournament’s most valuable player award as well. That performance more or less locked up the Ballon d’Or 11 months before it was handed to him.

The version of Lionel Messi who has become South Florida’s reigning sport king is not the playmaker in his prime that he was for Barcelona or the tortured captain-under-pressure that he was for Argentina. The Messi of Miami is, in his own words, happy. Happy to show his young new team, Inter Miami of M.L.S., how to win. Less happy, perhaps, to deal with South Florida’s crushing summer humidity. Inter Miami, which had the fewest points in M.L.S.

The Future of Rap Is Female
  + stars: | 2023-08-09 | by ( Niela Orr | Photographs Adrienne Raquel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +22 min
The Future of Rap Is Female As their male counterparts turn depressive and paranoid, it’s the women who are having all the fun. In the mid-’80s, the dynamics shifted slightly, when UTFO released “Roxanne, Roxanne,” a comical torch song dissing a woman who rejected the men’s advances. Like good sex, raunchy rap is only fun if all parties are completely enthusiastic, and this music provides necessary female perspectives to match what the men make. In Miami one weekend in late July, Rolling Loud, one of the biggest annual hip-hop festivals, made itself into a microcosm of the rap world. There’s a relentless gender pessimism in the air, too — on the street, on dating apps, in the Supreme Court and, of course, in rap music.

Miami’s Messi madness — over the arrival of the soccer superstar Lionel Messi, one of the most famous humans on the planet — reached a fever pitch last week when he was spotted at a Publix grocery store near Fort Lauderdale, buying Lucky Charms and Fruit Loops. Mr. Messi and his photogenic young family had landed in a soccer-crazy region that had been hoping to nab him for years. Already, Mr. Messi looked like a local, clad in shorts and flip-flops. South Florida has been consumed with a frenzied fandom for Mr. Messi, the Argentine whose signing on Saturday represented a coup for Inter Miami of Major League Soccer and for Miami itself, the unofficial capital of Latin America, with a penchant for celebrity. When the team presented Mr. Messi to a packed stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday night, following a violent thunderstorm, he thanked the crowd in Spanish “for helping us feel at home so quickly.”

He hugged the owners of his new team, including the former star David Beckham. 10 — Lionel Messi grinned and looked up at the crowd and the fireworks. If it has felt like a dream that Messi, who won the World Cup in December as Argentina’s captain and who has claimed seven Ballons d’Or as the world’s best player, chose Inter Miami of M.L.S. as his team for the twilight of his career, his unveiling event was proof that, yes, this has actually happened. Messi’s introduction was called La PresentaSíon, the presentation in Spanish, but with “Sí” (“Yes”) emphasized.

Lupe del Pino took out an interest-free loan to cover a special assessment for structural improvements to the Miami building where she recently bought a condo. Lupe del Pino recently paid $258,000 for a two-bedroom condo unit with a balcony in North Miami Beach. That amount was within her allotted budget, but she had an additional cost to pay. Her building is in the process of complying with new state requirements to improve the structural integrity of older buildings. The condo board is borrowing $7.5 million to restore the concrete of the structure and make other improvements.
The SEC Monday took emergency action against crypto firm BKCoin and its co-founder for allegedly running a fraud scheme. The company allegedly ran a $100 million Ponzi scheme that paid for its co-founder's rent and vacations. The asset freeze marks US regulators' intense crackdown on the crypto sector following FTX's collapse. BKCoin and Kang assured investors their money would be used to trade crypto, and that the company would generate returns for investors through separately managed accounts. "This action highlights our continued commitment to protecting investors and uprooting fraud in all securities sectors, including the crypto asset arena," said Eric Bustillo, director of the SEC's Miami office.
Genting Malaysia Bhd., the Southeast Asia casino operator, is marketing 15.5 acres of waterfront land in downtown Miami with an asking price of about $1 billion, according to the brokerage firm handling the sales process. “There’s never been a property of this size ever available, at this kind of location,” said Michael T. Fay, the principal and managing director of Avison Young ‘s Miami office, which is marketing the parcel.
Millennium Management, which houses multiple trading pods across the globe, is looking for more than 100 engineers and developers to help expand its footprint in top technology hubs. Izzy Englander's $57 billion fund is just one of many quant shops battling it out with the finance industry and top tech companies for hot talent. The firm is looking for back-end engineers, front-end engineers, data engineers, and quantitative researchers who are experts in Python, which is a popular computer programming language. Millennium looks for the typical attributes most financial institutions and big tech companies look for in engineers like experience and having an "entrepreneurial mindset," Talarico said. "You have to be able to communicate effectively with your client, whether that is an investment professional or someone else in the organization or someone else within technology" Talarico said.
The social media app will be developed by Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG). Digital World Acquisition Corp., the blank-check company looking to take Trump Media and Technology Group public, has changed its listed address to a UPS store in Miami. The change from a Miami office building to a UPS address came with DWAC's regulatory filing on Friday disclosing its financing losses. The contractual obligation for those investors to contribute to former President Donald Trump's media company after the deal had expired last Tuesday, allowing them to pull their funding. One of the former private investors told CNBC that it pulled financing from DWAC because of the many legal obstacles facing the company.
